Who's who at Powerful Learning Practice
Powerful Learning Practice has worked with over 4,000 educators, administrators, speakers, educational thought leaders, teacher leaders, and more over the past 5 years we've been in business. We get to network with some pretty amazing and noteworthy people along the way. We'd like you to meet some of them. Check out the profiles below.
Meet the PLPeeps: Millie Guzman
Learning Globally The PLP take-away varies from teacher to teacher. For Millie Guzman it was personal. Millie, a Spanish teacher from Bronxville School, participated in the Ontario cohort last year. Her team of “six chicks” worked together to create a model of learning for their school by basing the project on what each individual was learning herself. And Millie knew exactly what she wanted to focus on: her sister school in Ecuador. “We wanted to share what we were learning personally,” she said. “But we also wanted to make sure...

We love when our PLPers win awards and are celebrated for their work. The Center for Digital Education and Converge Online have just announced Brian Licata, who was in the PEARLS cohort last year, as winner in the K-12 Education Digital Application/Project category. According to the Converge website, “The awards showcase exceptional K-12 and higher education websites, digital technology projects and programs that have enriched education for students and teachers.” Check out Brian’s videos and see why the organization decided...

By Susan Carter Morgan We’ve written about this team before. And now THE Journal has, too! PLPeep Cary Harrod, Instructional Technology specialist for the Forest Hills District in Cincinnati, was featured in a recent article in the magazine. Their BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop program is an outgrowth of her team’s work in the Ohio Consortium last year. The district had been struggling to fund a 1:1 laptop initiative for a number of years. Finally, after their work with PLP, Cary’s team developed a plan, which THE Journal...

K-12 schools aren’t the only ones to benefit from the Powerful Learning Practice model, as Scott Schwister discovered. Scott, a program administrator and adjunct faculty member at Hamline University, led his team of teachers through the PLP journey last year. The “shift” began for many on the first day, he said. “We had a perfect storm in terms of group,” he said, with members of the team coming from various departments and levels of experience. A curious, open-minded team, they were ready to “invest time” and “build common...

Sometimes a little inspiration goes a long way. Claude Sigmund from the Edina School District in Minnesota said he has always been interested in technology. But it was the PLP piece that provided the needed inspiration to take it further. “I could do the tool. I knew what to do in the classroom,” he said. What he didn’t have his head around was decision-making at the policy level. Claude’s team in the TriState cohort, which just finished up, worked on getting a “grassroots” push to help those at the top understand the importance of...

By Susan Carter Morgan We know we have great Community Leaders. And we love it even more when the world knows it. Brian Crosby, CL for the Bryan cohort and Experienced Voice for many others, has been chosen to present at TEDxDenverEd.Brian, an elementary teacher from Nevada, has been blogging here about his teaching for a long time. He has been asked to speak about the innovative ways he works with his students. “I subtly point out that current education models and reform attempts are rooted in old ways, and I try to make the case for...

Kinkaid School’s Director of Technology Larry Kahn has become something of a cheerleader for PLP. In his second year in the Ohio consortium, he has not only helped the “rockin’ and rollin” to happen at his school, he also helped Parish Episcopal School join the PLP team, too. After serving on that school’s accreditation team, he recommended they put a full time technology director in place. Dolores Gende became that person, and shortly after, her school also joined the Powerful Learning Practice. Larry’s so enjoyed his first year...

PLP journeys come in all flavors and sizes. Cary Harrod from the Ohio Consortium discovered year two to be the time she could put all the pieces together. “Year One has so much new,” she said. “In the second year, I’ve been immersed as a learner again. One of the more rewarding pieces of my educational career has been to put myself back into the place we ask our kids to be.” Her PLP journey has changed her as a person, she said. “I see everything as a puzzle. This year was different because I was much more reflective and...

The ripple effect. That’s what Director of Technology Jason Kern of the Oakridge School calls what happened to the Powerful Learning Practice team this year. “We had one person using tech…but now all six are involved in different ways all over campus,” he said. “We started conversations all over school.” Jason feels one reason PLP worked is that they did not use the “in your face” approach. Instead, members of the team offered to share what they were learning, share what was working with other faculty around the school. Each...
