Beginning today and through Sunday, PLP will donate $5 for every comment left on any of our posts.
We’ve seen social media effect change in our classrooms and our students. But this is an opportunity to think about social media on a larger scale. We have the power to do more.
So, PLP is joining Mashable in participating in Social Good Day on September 23, and we hope you will join us. From their website:
We’re interested in unleashing fresh thinking about how social media can raise awareness and create solutions for social issues around the world. It starts with each community coming together and contributing ideas and, more importantly, solutions. Whatever community you’ll be participating in we want to know,“What’s your solution?” Let the world hear your ideas through social media!
PLP will donate $5 per meaningful comment on any of our blog posts. Please use the #socialgood when you leave the comment–and then tweet it out or put it on your Facebook page. Our donation will be sent to RED, an organization designed to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.
Social Media for Social Good. Please join us in this important cause!
We are also pleased to join these bloggers, who are also making a difference. Visit and see the collective power of good:

Get inspired to donate to (RED) today. Watch the Lazarus Effect: a 30-minute documentary that follows the story of HIV positive people in Africa who in as few as 40 days undergo a remarkable transformation thanks to access to treatment that costs around 40 cents a day.

@parnellk63
Thank you for doing this post and donating!
Happy Social Good Day!
Kudos for your wonderful generosity!
I was directed here by my internet buddy, Limecello.
This is a wonderful way to harness the power of the global internet community in a positive way, to help people in great need.
Thank you for a wonderful post.
I love socially responsible people! Thanks for doing this!
Hm – ok and don’t know if my first one counts as a “meaningful comment” – hope so, but if not, this one should! Thanks so much for doing this blog drive/fundraiser – you motivated me to do my own here: http://bit.ly/dzIdg5 And we’ve got $350 pledged if we can hit 100 comments and we’re only ~15 away!!!
Susan, thanks for being part of this. It’s so good to see the difference social media can make!
Great cause! Hope we can get these numbers up!
Have only sort-of been aware of RED and this is a good re-introduction. As for getting involved I am going to think locally and see what I can do at home as well to donate time to a cause.
@amber, @keith, @tina, @limecello Thanks for helping us raise $ for RED. We appreciate your contributions, too. You all rock!
I hope folks will comment and help us get this support going where it should be.
@lindsey, @manda, @yuping, @amanda, @portia, @farrah Thanks for being part of our special social good day!!
What a terrific idea! Many thanks to PLP for supporting this so generously.
Thanks everyone! Tell your friends to come comment. We are excepting comments as part of Social Good through Sunday.
Wow, what a great idea! Sounds like something our students would love as well. Thanks for doing this.
Very generous of you! Thank you for for your hard work!
Thank you for doing this!
Thank you so much for doing this. Social media can be very powerful and people working together can affect change.
Thanks for the invite to participate in the cause. It is great to see a model of “walking the talk”.
I am a proud supporter of (RED), and am going to continue to share Social Good Day with my peers. It is great to see PLP joining the fight and making a difference. The battle against HIV/AIDS in Africa can be won. For just $0.40 a day, we can keep someone with HIV alive. What a way to change the life of someone in need of our help! Thanks to Product (RED), Mashable, and PLP! #socialgood
This is a wonderful opportunity to see another side of the organization developing community ties at a different level.
And excellent idea and an excellent cause. 🙂
I was unaware of the site until I read Susan’s post. We do have the potential through social media to make a difference, more so than ever before. This is a great cause and I am very pleased to be part of an organization that seeks out ways to contribute.
Connections govern behavior….Cheers to Social Good!
Just wanted to put $5 more toward a great cause!!
Might be the first comment I mae for a cause, curius to see what’s next
So glad to be part of such an amazing cause! 🙂
Too often we think of web 2.0 technologies as simply ways to connect with friends. However, this is a great example of how connective technologies can help mobilize for a cause. Congrats and thanks to Powerful Learning Practices for making the opportunity available.
Happy Social Good Day!
One of our Teachers visited Africa with her church group this summer, she is collecting posters to give to schools in Africa as she will return, Ms. Rose, MacArthur School, El Paso, TX 79925 if you are interested in Donating any posters you are not using!
Great idea! Great cause.
Thanks for making this possible.
Way to go…what a noble concept!
Wow – this is my first time ever commenting through social media. What a neat an amazing idea for a cause. Getting my feet wet in this stuff and hope to learn lots more. #socialgood
I’m down for a good cause. This is a great idea!
#socialgood I am a very fortunate educator that gets to use social networking to teach my students. I have see genious mental leaps by students who are collaborating across social networking websites and groups. We can not stand alone and affect change. We need people working together. Students and humans will do great and good things if the oppertinity is provided. Just look at all these comments and the ripple effect that PLP has had on all of us. Cheers to the folks at PLP for creating this forum to educate us, make us aware, give us a way to join, create an avenue for us to become apart of this and mostly for giving back to make a better world! This is exciting! Thank you, Marcie
Thank you Marcie. WE hope also to inspire in you ideas you can do to use social media for the common good. WE believe that collective action around social justice issues is the way our generation can make the biggest impact. Use the socialability to make a difference.
mean
each
makes
a contribution?
Cool! : )
Hmm … my idea above didn’t work as well as I thought it would … hope they still count though! Was supposed to say:
“You mean each comment makes a contribution ??? Cool!
Maybe someone else could do it better? : )
So glad to see comments like- “My first time commenting on social media” – makes it all worthwhile on 2 fronts! Great!
Even though I’ve only been dabbling in social networking for the past year, I’ve seen the good that can happen when you pay it forward using social media. My experience came with #THON in February. Find a cause that means something to you and spread the word; every little bit of good helps all of us.
What a way to make a difference in the world. This is for great cause!!!
#SocialGood I think it’s wonderful that social networking can help such a worthwhile cause. This is just a great thing to do.
This is an amazing idea. And $5 is a lot of dollars. You go…
What a FANTASTIC WAY to give back !! Any of these Charities are wonderful & deserving! Thanks ALL for doing what you’re doing!
You guys are making me word hard, and I love it!!! Thanks for your comments to make our contribution worthwhile. RED is a wonderful cause, and you all are fantastic to help us move toward our goal.
Thanks so much, @larry, @erin, @christie, @mimsy, @margarita, @michael, @c2, @robin, @anastacia, @kari, @michele, @ann, @tony, @henry, @karen, @jane, @lori, @pansy, @marcie, @Brian (so funny) , @becky, and @todd. Hope I didn’t forget anyone!!!
In Austin, TX, we brainstormed about PRACTICAL ways that environmental issues such as clean water & solar power could easily be brought to some of the remotest areas of Africa yet powerfully change their lives for the positive!
We will continue to hold our monthly meetings to bring onboard more of the tech savvy individuals that live in our community to actualize some of the visions to achieve the MDG’s that we talked about at our first meeting.
Thanks Mashable and (RED) for bringing us together for good!
Thanks, guys! Love to see this.
Thanks for donating!
Thanks for doing this!!
Thanks for supporting a great cause!
This is awesome!
Heh – I have to admit I’ve got the same question Brian does 😉
But anyway – this is awesome! Beyond pleased you’re doing this – thanks!
This is such a great idea. Thank you for doing this!
Social media has become so powerful with the ability to promote and do great things like this!
Thank you!
What a great idea! Well done on your part.
*post* 😀
This is a pretty cool video. I haven’t seen it before.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
This is a great thing! I hope we can get a ton of people to comment
Wonderful thing you all are doing here. Soon everyone will be cu(red).
I think social media, and the connections that we gain through it, are part of what makes us best as humans. Through the connections that we gain with others and the possibility for gaining in depth understanding of global issues on a first had basis, social media gives us an opportunity that I believe is different than others have had before us. While it is up to us to take these opportunities (simply being on facebook doesn’t make you a better person), democratizing innovation and information is a powerful force for good.
Wow! This is such a wonderful idea and cause. Thank you for having us be a part of it.
#SocialGood What a great idea! I love that we are helping others simply by communicating with each other and posting comments to a blog! This is why we need to teach our children how to use social networking. It has so many more uses than just talking to friends!
What a fantastic idea! Thank you for making a difference!
What a super idea! I hope you raise a lot of money!
Greetings from Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 PLP Group. What a great amount of good we can do when we all pull together!
This is a great way to allow many of us to contribute in some way!
