Future-Proofing Students Living in Poverty

I have a question for you.

Why did you go into education?

What motivated you to become a teacher or educational leader?

I bet if you’re like me, it’s because you wanted to make a difference. You wanted to be able to speak into, to mold and mentor and guide young people’s lives so they could become strong, productive citizens. What really attracted me to education was the desire to help children that had grown up in challenging circumstances — those whose circumstances have conspired against them — children living in poverty. I know what it’s like to grow up in poverty, and I also know what it’s like to overcome the circumstances I was born into. I am passionate about helping kids who were just like me, and that’s why I created this course.

I’m Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, co-founder and CEO of Powerful Learning Practice, and I’m also the instructor for this course.

Future-Proofing Students Living in Poverty draws from best practice, research, and my own personal experience, both as an educator who has taught children living in poverty and as a child who grew up in poverty herself.

I’ll bring personal stories and experiences to bear in this class, as well as the latest research on how to work with kids in challenging circumstances. We’ll explore poverty’s impact on students and families, debunk stereotypes of children who grow up in challenging environments, and finally, look at teaching strategies, best pedagogy, technology tools, and learning techniques to help you reach ALL learners.

Future-Proofing Students Living in Poverty

Thanks to the McKinney-Vento Act, we have seen much improvement in our most socio-economically challenged students in helping them enroll in school and remain in school.

  • Now that we have our students in the schools and classrooms, the conversation is shifting.
  • What do we need to do to make sure they are successful?
  • Is access and stability enough?
  • What else needs to be considered as we work to improve the learning experiences for all students?
  • What role does technology and connected learning offer in terms of positive impact for these children?

This course explores strategies that can support both the academic development and the emotional development of children living in poverty.

Here’s what participants will learn in this course:

Understanding Impact

Discuss the impact of socioeconomic class on student achievement.

Stereotypes Associated with Poverty

Explore the stereotyping and misunderstandings that surround children living in poverty.

Teaching Strategies

Learn evidence-based strategies that promote achievement of students of poverty.

Connected Learning Tools and Strategies

Use a variety of connected learning tools and strategies to deepen learning for all students.

Changed Classroom Practice

Develop a personal action plan which incorporates modifications for diverse learners, creates a positive learning climate, eliminates bias within a classroom or school and that applies current research about the needs of students living in poverty.
