The building of relationships takes time, but the investment pays off in big dividends, says Dean Shareski, Digital Learning Consultant with the Prairie South Subdivision in Moose Jaw, SK, Canada and sessional lecturer for the University of Regina.

Because of those relationships and his leadership in educational technology around the world, Dean has won the ISTE Leadership award for 2010. Dean is also a Community Leader for the Powerful Learning Practice, where he guides and nurtures his cohort much as he shares with and learns from his colleagues around the world—generously.

“You get it back, ” he says. “There is that investment of time. People have to be aware that social networking…building of relationships… takes time. But this is what will facilitate learning.” Dean says his incentive is to help people learn, regardless of where they are in the process.

Last year’s ISTE’s winner is also a PLP Community Leader. Karl Fisch is the Director of Technology at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado. He also believes his work with PLP has influenced his work with colleagues locally and around the world.

“Working with teachers in a virtual learning community has influenced how I use both virtual and physical spaces in my staff development efforts, and continues to provide me with ideas that I share with teachers in my own building,” Karl says. He believes “there is a parallel track of learning for me as a result of interacting with the other folks in PLP: Sheryl, Will, Robin and all the other Community Leaders.”

For Dean, one of the best parts of working with PLP is to be able to “take what I was learning and begin to bring in back to the people I was working with everyday, both as employee and teacher at the university. In PLP, we learn to build community and push people forward.”

Powerful Learning Practice is proud of these two ISTE winners who model the practice of learning and sharing in all they do. Congratulations!
