Sunday, March 4th at 7pm EST, we’d like to invite you to join us for our very first #plpnetwork Twitter chat!
What is a Twitter chat?
A Twitter chat is a lot like any other online chat, where people gather to talk about a specific issue. The great thing about a Twitter chat is it brings people together from all over world to a central area (Twitter) where they can interact in real time. To join a Twitter chat, you just need to know what hashtag is being used. A hashtag is simply a way to search topics on Twitter and is recognized as a word preceded by a pound sign, such as #education or #plpnetwork.
How do I participate?
You can simply go to Twitter.com and login, then type #plpnetwork into the search box at the top. If you keep refreshing the search results, you will see the chat stream as it comes in through Twitter.
You may also use an application specifically designed to monitor Twitter chats. The most popular options are TweetChat, TweetGrid, and TweetDeck. These applications will allow you to enter your search term (#plpnetwork) and show a stream that will update in real time (or based on how often you tell the application to refresh the stream).
The topic of our inaugural Twitter chat is:
The Benefits of Engaging in Online Communities
Communities succeed when the people within them trust each other, share with one another, and build collective wisdom. Trust and rapport come from collaboration, interaction, and, most of all, conversation. Join us on Twitter for a conversation about how to foster better online communication and collaboration, how to effectively engage in an online community to grow as a learner, and how online communities can change you, your classroom, school, or district.
What can I expect?
Fun, great conversation, and an opportunity for valuable professional development while enhancing your personal learning network and winning fantastic prizes!
The chat will be hosted by PLPeeps: Becky Bair (@becky7274) and Michelle Rogerson (@chelbycat) and will feature guest expert Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach (@snbeach).
Of course, we have prizes galore for participating in the chat! We will be giving away A&E History Channel DVDs, a copy of Sheryl and Lani’s latest book, The Connected Educator, and for one lucky winner, FREE enrollment into a PLP eCourse of their choosing!
Ask a question and get a bonus entry for prizes
You can help with the discussion in advance by sending questions about Engaging in Online Communities to michelle@plpnetwork.com! We’ll draw one prize winner from the questions submitted!
Be sure to follow @plpnetwork to qualify for prizes.

This sounds great, I take part in Twitter chats regularly and good to see one on this topic.
I’m a little confused as the abbreviation EST is used for several timezones globally, but I’m guessing in this case it’s New York time, yes? It will be Monday 11am in my part of the world (Canberra, Australia) but I’ll try to make it.
Lesley, thanks for clarifying the time. You are correct! The EST we’re using is for New York in the United States. We hope you’ll be able to join us.
The #PLPnetwork chat is at:
00:00 Monday 5 Mar GMT
11:00 Monday 5 Mar Australian Eastern Daylight Time
