Occasionally, Powerful Learning Practice likes to share great opportunities that we are doing with our Year Long Connected Learner Experience with others. We have decided to invite the public to our second of three – Virtual Classroom Visits.
Alan Fletcher is a middle grades teacher at Williston Central School in Milton, VT. He describes a lesson plan where he uses the TPACK model.
Description: Alan opens a window onto 3 segments of one of his class sessions. As he opens class, he reviews the goals for the day, offers few shout outs to students who have pushed themselves and encourages students to view and contribute to his social networking page. The purpose of that page — generating a stronger sense of inquiry in students.
In the second segment, students begin working on a current events game they play on a regular basis. Students are exposed to a number of news sites early in the year and work in teams to create a Google Presentation with quiz questions they have created and for which they must include multimedia.
In the final segment, students are engaged in a lesson connected to blogging which they do in every class. They are part of a quadblogging group which allows them to interact with other students from other schools.
In our Virtual Classroom Visits we watch the teacher teach the lesson and then engage in a threaded conversation around what he did that was in the best interest of kids or what we would change or sometimes just how do you do this.
Then we meet together online for 30 minutes and have a chance to debrief with the teacher about his lesson. We would love for you to join us.

Alan Fletcher lives in snowy Vermont with his wife Lynne and black Lab Zeus. “We have a wonderful spot on Lake Champlain. When we are not off on some adventure to far away places, we spend a lot of time outside.” He has been teaching at the middle level for over twenty years. His main focus is social studies and literature. He is currently working in Williston, VT in a public school on a four person team. “We have 5th – 8th graders on our team. My own goal in education over the last several years is to become highly engaged online, and to strengthen my networks.”
